When to Consider Inlays and Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays provide a solution when you have decayed or damaged teeth. They can restore, protect, and match the color of your natural tooth to give your smile a seamless appearance.

Dr. Howard Jeon and Dr. Michael Monto and our professional team at Advanced Implant Dentistry & MedSpa of North Shore in Glenview, Illinois, provide inlays and onlays to repair and restore your teeth and give you a confident smile.

But how do you know if inlays or onlays are right for you? Let’s look at reasons why you might need these methods of restoration.

When you need an inlay

When your tooth has an area of decay that’s too large for a simple filling, or if it’s fractured or damaged without affecting the tips of your tooth, you need an inlay. You can choose from several durable material options to seal your tooth and maintain its structure, which include composite resin and porcelain.

Here’s how an inlay can benefit you:

You treat your inlay just like you treat your natural teeth. Brush them at least twice a day and floss daily, as well.

When you need an onlay

If you have damaged the inside of your tooth, as well as the tips, an onlay provides an excellent solution for fixing it. Instead of removing a large portion of your tooth that you would normally need if you were getting a crown, we take away less of your original tooth and support it with an onlay.

The onlay covers more area than an inlay and less area than a crown, covering the elevated portion of your damaged tooth.

The benefits of an onlay are the same as an inlay. They also stay firmly on your tooth, don’t wear down, and you care for them the same way you care for an inlay or your natural teeth.

How the procedure works

When you come in for your appointment, we make sure you’re comfortable throughout your treatment.

We begin with numbing the area in your mouth with a local anesthetic. Once you can’t feel anything, we remove the decay in your tooth.

To get an accurate fitting for your inlay or onlay, we take an impression of your tooth and send it to the lab to have it created. We then apply a temporary filling to your tooth to protect it until we can apply your inlay or onlay with a permanent cement for a strong, lasting solution to your decayed or damaged tooth.

You walk away with a natural-looking restoration that extends the life of your teeth and protects you from further damage.
