What to Expect During an Oral Cancer Screening

Twice-yearly checkups with your dentist play a vital role in your oral health. Not only do these checkups keep your teeth and gums healthy, but they also allow us to detect serious problems, such as oral cancer.
At Advanced Implant Dentistry & MedSpa of North Shore in Glenview, Illinois, Dr. Howard Jeon, Dr. Michael Monto, and their team use routine checkups to look for problems with your teeth and gums, including abnormal growths. Oral cancer screenings are part of maintaining your oral health. Oral cancer typically appears as a growth that doesn’t go away.
As with other cancers, treatment is more successful when it is detected early.
First line of defense against oral cancer
There are roughly 59,600 new cases of oral cancer each year. When detected early, the five-year survival rate is more than 90%. It’s crucial to schedule a visit with our dentists every six months to detect subtle abnormal changes you may overlook when brushing and flossing.
What happens during an oral cancer screening?
When you visit Advanced Implant Dentistry & MedSpa of North Shore, one of our team members will review your medical history, including risk factors for oral cancer, such as a family history of oral cancer. We will also discuss your current health status and any questions or concerns you may have about your oral health.
During an oral cancer screening, we closely evaluate your oral cavity, including your cheeks, tongue, gums, and the floor and roof of your mouth. We look for anything abnormal, such as bumps, discoloration, and irregular-looking tissue.
However, don’t wait for your six-month checkup if you notice anything unusual with your oral health.
Contact us if you notice any of the following:
- Discolored patches in your mouth
- Lumps, bumps, or sores that don’t go away
- Unusual bleeding in your mouth
- Abnormal sensation of the lips or mouth
- Problems chewing or swallowing
- Soreness or pain in the back of your throat
Having regular checkups helps catch problems before they start or at their earliest, most treatable stages.
Follow-up discussion
After your oral health screening, we discuss any findings. If we detect something abnormal, you’ll be referred to the appropriate health care provider for further evaluation.
